Why do we like the stars so much? Because they´re like halfgods, or at least, heroes, up on that stage, or ultra-cool and suave in their sultry or hardcore-style videoclips. They´re larger than life with their uber-confidence. And they do wild things ordinary earthlings like you and I don´t do: throw phones at an assistant, thrash hotelrooms or going at it with the long queues of love-interests who are at their beck and call. We look up at them because, they´re well … starlike. They have a special aura and are admired for their individuality and originality. So why is it then that when watching Cribs, the MTV-series where celebs guide us through their palatial homes, it always leaves me with a deja-vu feeling?
Sportstars, rappers, pop-singing sensations; the decorations of each of their homes look alike, they all have the same items in their mansions. You see in different episodes come back the big plasma tv, the cooking island, the cascade in the grotto and the infinity pool. The celebs, the ´examples of originality´, they all seem to be copying their fellow-star. So much for originality. Now hold up for a minute. That´s someting that normal earthllngs do! It´s true that a lot of people see the car or the garden furniture of the nextdoor neighbour and want to get those things too. What sobering therefore too see that same psychological thing going on with our ´greats´. But then again; I guess that´s my fault. After all: stars are people too. You could see that on the Macy Gray-episode. The singer made a huge cock-up when letting the Cribs-filmcrew come in. She stumbled and stammered away. But boy, did I like her home. The painted basketball-yard, the house itself artistic with an aquarium looking like a giant marble and the all in leopardskin-conducted room (from the walls to the sink). There it all was: originality.
